Mom’s Orange-Cranberry Relish
PUBLISHED ON: 12.18.2009
This orange cranberry relish recipe that I found at George’s food blog A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse www.gmg706.blogspot.com was delicious. I prepared it for Thanksgiving and it was a hit with the family. They enjoyed it as a side dish with the roasted turkey. The next day, the family enjoyed it again as a spread on turkey sandwiches. I am going to prepare this festive relish for Christmas dinner. If you are looking for a relish to serve up with your roasted meats, think of adding this one to your holiday table. Thanks George!
Mom’s Orange-Cranberry Relish
makes 2-3 cups
Recipe from: A Nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse
Ingredients:
1 pound fresh cranberries
3 tablespoons dried cranberries
2 sticks cinnamon
1 teaspoon fresh ginger root, minced
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup apple cider
1 teaspoon fresh grated orange zest
Directions:
In a 2-quart saucepan, place the fresh and dried cranberries, cinnamon, ginger root, brown sugar, apple cider, and orange zest. Stir and simmer over low heat until cranberries pop-about 7 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.
To serve, transfer to a serving bowl.
Enjoy!

How lovely. I don't know if I've ever tried cranberry relish with dried cranberries; I imagine that adds some nice variety with texture.

The Absence of Alternatives
This is awesome. I will make this next year. I cook (like cook cook, from scratch and not from a box) once a year: for Thanksgiving. I make the side dishes. I have always enjoyed the no-frill cranberry sauce: Cranberry + Sugar. (Don't laugh!) This looks awesome. But you know, my husband still claims he likes the alien-looking jelly thingy the best. sigh.
The Absence of Alternatives
On second thought, I think I am going to make it for my MIL to go with the ham and turkey she is serving tonight and tomorrow. Wish me luck! (And I will report back…)

I'm such a sucker for anything cranberry. I've made something similar from a Whole Foods recipe, though I think it included sherry or some other alcohol. The orange and ginger really make the cranberry flavor pop, don't they?
